# Pet name generator

A new dog or cat deserves a good name. Pick a theme and a style, tap the heart on any you like, and keep a shortlist on this device.

## Finding a name that sticks

Every name here was written for this site and sorted by theme (food, nature, colours, classic people names, sky and sea, myth and legend, playful puns), by style (cute, classic, bold, elegant or silly), by whether it sounds more like a boy, a girl or either, and by whether it suits a dog, a cat or both. Filters narrow the list; "Show more names" deals a fresh hand of twelve from whatever matches.

Say your shortlist out loud a few times, the way you would call it across a park. Short names of one or two syllables are easy to call and hard to mishear. It is also worth avoiding names that sound like everyday commands, so "Kit" and "sit" do not get muddled. Your favourites stay in this browser; copy the list to share it with the family vote.

## Questions

**Can I rename a rescue dog or cat?**

Yes. Many owners do. Use the new name often and pair it with good things, such as a treat or a fuss, and most pets pick it up with time. If the old name meant something nice to them, a similar-sounding new name can make the change easier.

**Are favourites saved anywhere else?**

No. They are kept in this browser's local storage on this device and never sent anywhere. Clearing this site's data, or the Clear button, removes them.

**Why no famous cartoon pet names?**

Characters from films, cartoons and brands belong to their owners, so the lists here are our own ideas instead. You are of course free to name your pet whatever makes you smile.
